The conservative MP in England (yes, but it could be done here) and prominent green campaigner wants the government and public sector's £2bn (2.5bn$) annual food budget to be spent on produce that is organic, has been produced nearby and meets animal welfare standards.
He wants to kickstart a revolution in eating habits by ensuring that all schools, hospitals and care homes start using healthy, environmentally friendly, sustainable food.

Think if a group of US politicians took the lead on this--even on a statewide basis (especially in a state as large as California where there is a lot of locally grown and organic produce available). The huge amounts of money dumped for lousy food would be used to support healthy food plus local growing associations. If they can think about this in England, why not here?

But of course think who would oppose this: big farming interests (powerful lobbies)... companies like Coca Cola and Pepsi... McDonald's (in many schools)... it would be a refreshing battle for health and for the welfare of the environment.
