People start out at age 18 feeling pretty good about themselves, and then, apparently, life begins to throw curve balls. They feel worse and worse until they hit 50. At that point, there is a sharp reversal, and people keep getting happier as they age. By the time they are 85, they are even more satisfied with themselves than they were at 18.

The article has a great opening:
It is inevitable. The muscles weaken. Hearing and vision fade. We get wrinkled and stooped. We can’t run, or even walk, as fast as we used to. We have aches and pains in parts of our bodies we never even noticed before. We get old.
And then come the results of the study. Interesting and hopeful stuff.

For me I have just finally grown up. People don't bother me any more and I could care less about what people think of me. I am not worred about fashion. I wear what is comfortable. I am not having to get established by getting a home, car, furniture etc. I have made peace with not having kids and even though I have gained weight, I like myself as I am. I am comfortable in my skin. I am not trying to impress anyone any longer. I do wish I could be more physicially active, but I have developed a few more pains and ills that hamper that goal. I wish that I had known what I know now when I was 20. I could have avoided a lot of mistakes.

To the young:
As the folk saying goes, "too soon old and too late smart". Working for "The Man" is a giant waste of time! If you're going to work for anyone, work for yourself. Live free is more than just two words; it is an expression of how you should live life for the adventure, how to be daring and innovative and follow your own idea(l)s whether others agree with you or not. If you didn't think of it, don't do it, unless it inspires you to happiness. The holes you dig now, you'll have to fill later so the fewer holes you dig for yourself, the more time you'll have for yourself when filling all the holes is impossible. You don't need "stuff". No one needs "stuff". There is no such thing as wealth... except with those whom you love and who love you!
To those of you who are Americans, go to ALL of the national parks and hike to those sections that are remote from today. Get your priorities straight and feel the freedom that is possible in your own soul. NOTHING is more valuable to you personally than the freedom of your soul!
