GM soya plants were created to withstand herbicides which are highly toxic and can cause damage to human health, claims a summary of scientific studies.

Glyphosate, a chemical found in herbicides commonly used on GM crops, damages human embryonic cells and placental cells when exposed to concentrations below those recommended for agricultural use.

The study also found that mice, rabbits and rats fed genetically modified soya beans suffered serious health side affects including liver, kidney, heart and reproduction problems.

Many of us were suspicious when some of the truth would come out--here's an unexpected source and a big problem with GM crops. Scientifically established.

There have always been problems with allergies that can be so serious they can kill (e.g., a potential problem with GM modified salmon). This is another pinpoint of danger.

I don't think this has anything to do with labeling--though the labeling seems pretty thorough here in Ireland. There is even a push to keep GM crops out of this agriculture country completely. “The Irish Government outlined in its programme for government that the island of Ireland should be declared a GM-free zone. This needs to be implemented immediately and then Ireland would be in an excellent position to supply Europe with GM-free food.”

I would like it labeled here so I don't buy it. Further I don't think they should be growing these kinds of crops anywhere much less allowing the public to consume it.

I certainly agree with you there. Not to label the stuff... that is amazing. Apparently they are stopping companies from labelling their stuff "NOT GMO"--the Feds are supporting this.

Figures our government backs the corp. rather than giving our public the opportunity to make an informed decision about what they are buying.

Wall Street loves Washington because no one is better at feeding hungry corporations. Look at the farm subsidies to see that 32 of 435 Congressional Districts bring home half of the dollars. Want to guess how many sit of the Ag Committee and have backers in agribusiness?

Converting to a privatized, fee based food supply has been run by Monsanto out of the USDA and FDA Animal Health agencies as far back as Reagan. Poppy Bush created a "Biotech Deregulation Policy" that essentially gave Monsanto a blank check to sell their creations without oversight or testing.

Clinton gave Monsanto the support to ensure the Roundup Ready crops and hormone dairy were big money makers that stayed hidden from US consmers and foced down the throats of the world's people through aggressive policies on trade.

Right now we have Monsanto friend Hillary at State with Biotech Brigade's handmaiden Nina Fedoroff pushing the stuff on the third world as USAID with a pinch of PR spin offered like a government opinion. What a horrid sham by every measure, eh? Fight back, buy local!!

Thanks for the article Truthlover; it is some consolation to see the world press paying attention to an issue that America's corporate media tries hard to ignore. One of the best summaries of the genetically engineered salmon situation is offered by Center for Food Safety who do oversight government ought to.

Misguided FDA Opposition to Labeling Could Leave Public Permanently in the Dark About GE Animals

Recent Poll Shows 91% of Americans Oppose GE Animals; CFS calls for clear, mandatory labeling

After a two-day public hearing on the approval of the first genetically engineered (GE) animal intended for human consumption, the AquAdvantage GE salmon, FDA held a public hearing today to discuss whether or not these GE fish should be labeled as such should they be approved. A 60-day public comment period on the labeling issue will be open until November 22, 2010.

The EU is not particularly GM minded, though the UK seems to be. Ireland is the only nation I know of that has a plan of sorts to keep GM food out. I can't cite the reference, since I posted it, but if you google (or stay in the vine) with"Ireland" and "GM-free zone" something should come up.
