Military Pushes for Much More Solar Energy Reliance in Afghanistan

The US military is putting solar energy at the front and intends to increase its use over the next few years.

The cost calculation is also favorable. When it costs hundreds of dollars to get each gallon of traditional fuel to base camps in Afghanistan, the investment is quickly defrayed.

The military will change the direction of energy habits, help develop new products, and bring down the cost of solar energies.

Hopefully more than just solar. This could be the engine that drives us to renewable energy.... one would hope.

This is actually a very positive development. Once people decide we need something for military purposes, lots of money is poured into development! And inevitably the result is that the improved designs that are invented will find their way into civilian applications as well.

A wider move towards solar (as well as some other forms of alternative energy) is long overdue.

Last week, a Marine company from California arrived in the rugged outback of Helmand Province bearing novel equipment: portable solar panels that fold up into boxes; energy-conserving lights; solar tent shields that provide shade and electricity; solar chargers for computers and communications equipment.

This great stuff.. I wish I had more of it when I was deployed to Iraq in '08. I had a small solar charger that I bought myself and used it to recharge my laptop and SAT toy. It had a slow trickle charge but was enough to charge both items during the day. When I gott back at night they were fully charged and allowed me to upload my imagery from literally in the middle of BFE(I) because I didn't always come back to base.
