How Right-Wing-Nut and TeaParty Conspiracy Theories Pose a Genuine Threat to All of Humanity

"Agenda 21" is one of a number of silly but dangerous conspiracy theories sweeping through the fever swamps of the right. Although admittedly sinister-sounding, Agenda 21 is just a blueprint for sustainable development, especially in emerging economies. It outlines how wealthier countries can contribute to smarter growth through technology transfers and public education. It stresses the importance of fighting deforestation and conserving bio-diversity -- all things that normal people would consider wise.

The important thing to understand about Agenda 21 is that there is absolutely nothing binding or compelling member countries to implement any part of it. It's not a treaty -- it is entirely voluntary and certainly doesn't have any connection to local governments. Yet for the right, with its long John Birch Society undercurrent of paranoia about international institutions, Agenda 21 represents some kind of dark UN conspiracy to impose socialism on the "free world."

That craziness lies at the heart of Michele Bachmann's quixotic war on energy-efficient lightbulbs. Tim Murphy reported, "The Minnesota congresswoman is part of a movement that considers 'sustainability' an existential threat to the United States, one with far-reaching consequences for education, transportation, and family values."

Last year, during the Denver mayoral race, Tea Party candidate Dan Maes argued that a local bike-sharing program, a popular initiative among city residents, was a "very well-disguised" part of a plan by then-Denver mayor (and now Colorado governor) John Hickenlooper for "converting Denver into a United Nations community." Alex Jones constantly hawks the conspiracy. Glenn Beck warned it would lead to "centralized control over all of human life on planet Earth." And in September, Newt Gingrich, hoping to burnish his wingnutty creds, told a group of Orlando Tea Partiers that, if elected, his first order of business would be "to cease all federal funding of any kind of activity that relates to United Nations Agenda 21." (Currently, no federal funding of any kind is used for implementing Agenda 21.)

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a Sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. ...Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here'. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and Grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."

SENATOR BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA, MARCH 2006

So do agree with this statement or not ?

Hey, quoting "the one" is not fair. Everyone knows that he didn't really mean it (he had his finger crossed behind his back). (sarc)

Great seed, truthlover.

Clearly, the Tin Foil Hat people are out in force. Agenda 21? New World Order? Death panels? Good lord.

I wonder if these Tea Party people understand that they're being played for corporate profits?

I'm pretty sure they don't.

Good seed truthlover.

So do agree with this statement or not ?

Yes I do. The GDP was growing at a rate of 3% or so at the time and had been for the most part since Bush took office. Yes there where some minor dips, but on average the GDP was about 3%. So why were we increasing the debt? I could even go along with the idea that growth wasn't sufficient to pay down the debt, but it was definitely strong enough to hold the line. Yet we were in the process of doubling the debt at the time. This is asinine. Though I don't think it was a lack of leadership. I think it was intentional and Bush was leading quite effectively on the policy of "starve the beast" and the attempt to bankrupt the country to eliminate all social programs. And the fate of the country was not a concern as long as they could get rid of SS, Medicare/Medicaid, EPA, HHS, DoEd, etc. And concentrate more and more wealth into fewer and fewer hands.

Wildwonderful, I agree and disagree with the statement. I agree that we shouldn't be putting burdens on our children and grandchildren--which we are, obviously, by letting the greenhouse effect and global warming get out of control.

As far as the economic claims in the quote are concerned, there's an old saying: "you've got to spend money to make money." We need to put money into job stimulus and to supporting the unemployed and those with jobs too. This is better for the economy--forget fairness and all of that.

We also need to limit our spending by cutting back on spending for the military-industrial complex, their toys, and extravegent military spending.

By the way, I'm not a fan of Obama's--rather, I'm an utterly disillusioned progressive.

Agree with the statement? Damn right I do and it wouldn't matter who said it. The failure of leadership caused the debt crisis and that started long before Obama and continues today. But the topic here is specifically right wing nut conspiracy theorists and the harm they do. Stop trying to make it about Obama.

No Washington isn't. WE ARE. It is the whole Libertarian and Republican idea of "individualism". This country was built on shared sacrifice during the rough times and shared benefit during the good. But today it is whats mine is mine and I want more at any expense. There is no shared sacrifice, there is an Ayn Rand psychopathic attitude of aggressive anti social selfishness. And those that follow it don't care what it does to the country or their fellow citizens as long as they profit from it. That is psychopathic and the inmates are running the asylum. And we vote them in.

Spending money to make money is a completely different analogy than just wasting money. Please forgive me but government does not create jobs.

Please forgive me but government does not create jobs.

And neither do businesses. Demand does. Without unmet demand a business will not hire more people. If government increases demand by direct spending or through social safety nets or both the demand creates jobs that the businesses fill.

This just shows how out of control people can become when they believe something they are told without bothering to check into it themselves. Someone with a political agenda can easily mislead and manipulate them into a frenzy. Another example of this would be the right-wing panic over the proposed UN small arms treaty. Many people have been convinced that the UN is coming after their guns when nothing in it will have any effect on the domestic laws regarding the transfer and ownership in any country.

RP, for someone who claims to be a physicist, you sure aren't very good at math. The feds could tax everyone at 80 percent and it wouldn't be enough to cover the future obligations.
